Texan, Outlaw and Legend: Blaze Foley

The name Blaze Foley might not be a familiar one. You may have heard it, but not sure where or the context. Many of his contemporaries have become almost mythical beings, like Townes Van Zandt. Like many songwriters, he lived a life that was rich in inspiration, and often that came at a personal cost. Blaze’s long-time muse, Sybil Rosen, wrote his story and that became the basis for Ethan Hawke’s new film.

The backbone of the movie “Blaze” is the songs. Director Ethan Hawke and star Ben Dickey took that catalog and crafted an earnest portrayal of a man struggling with raw talent and the demons that often come with that ability. While his life was cut tragically short, his songs live on through others, finding their way on to albums from Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett, John Prine and more. Blaze Foley’s life even provided the inspiration to Lucinda William’s “Drunken Angel”.

“Blaze” the film is out in select theaters all over Texas, and the sound track to the film will be released on September 21. To honor the film’s Texas roots, Light in the Attic Records will release the soundtrack as a limited edition red vinyl, only available in select Texas record stores.

This weekend on the Saturday Night Special, Sarah will showcase a few songs recorded by Blaze, along with a few songs from the movie soundtrack. Watch the trailer for “Blaze” below
